Space to See Clearly: Tailored Fitout Enhances Optometry Services on Maling Road
At Corplex, we understand that even small footprints can deliver big results, especially when the work is precision-focused and tailored to a client’s operational goals. Our recent extension for Canterbury Eyecare on Maling Road is a clear example of smart, considered design responding to specialist requirements, all within the character and constraints of a tightly held retail strip.
Working within a total land area of approximately 180m², the project involved a carefully planned internal extension and fitout that enhances Canterbury Eyecare’s ability to deliver high-quality, contemporary eye care. The total building area now stands at 165m², efficiently allocated between a welcoming retail environment, private consulting spaces and purpose-built storage, ensuring every square metre works hard for the business.

A key component of the upgrade is the approximately 100m² retail space at the front of the tenancy. Designed to feel open, accessible and inviting, this area allows Canterbury Eyecare to showcase eyewear and products in a calm, uncluttered setting while maintaining strong street presence along Maling Road. The improved layout enhances customer flow, supports retail interaction and creates a seamless transition between the shopfront and clinical areas.
Behind the retail zone, new office and clinical consulting rooms enable private, on-site eye testing and diagnostics. These spaces are fitted with specialised optometry equipment and designed to provide a quiet, professional environment that improves patient comfort and streamlines day-to-day operations. Two new office suites were constructed using 90mm steel or timber stud partition walls with acoustic lining, ensuring privacy without compromising functionality.

Storage was another critical requirement, addressed through a dedicated, well-integrated storage area that efficiently houses equipment and stock. By relocating storage away from the shopfront, the design frees up valuable retail floor space and supports a cleaner, more customer-focused experience.
While modest in scale, the extension delivers a meaningful operational uplift. Canterbury Eyecare can now offer a broader range of services in-house, reduce wait times and improve patient confidentiality, all while strengthening their retail presence.
